Space, the final frontier. Space is what we need—to gather, to organise, to rehearse, to resist. But space itself is contested. It’s a commodity, a privilege, a battleground. It can be granted or denied. Sometimes, the lack of space is all that stops a brilliant project from taking off. Therefore, we’re always on the lookout for practices and places we can share and shelter from speculation: vacant buildings as workshop/atelier, affordable desk space to work, places to gather and organise meetings, powwows and get-togethers, community spaces …
City Mine(d) proposes a
Deep Work Week on Spatial Practices
From 22 February to 1 March 2026
How do we lay out / finance / govern / manage access to spaces outside market and state ?
During this week
- 5 international and 3 Brussels-based artists / architects / researchers / thinker(er)s / practitioners are invited to imagine / to (re)present / to conceptualise / to organise / to list their response to these questions
- a 3-day participatory planning workshop will be organised around the same questions
- a final event on the 28 Febr 2026 aims at sharing insights with a wider audience
We are inviting • 5 international artists / architects / researchers / thinker(er)s / practitioners who will work with local contributors
Requirements for international artists:
- Interest in and experience with vacant buildings either as a practitioner or a researcher
- Ability to produce in the span of a week a (geographical or complexity) mapping relating to the topic in a format of choice (text, photography, video, audio, graphic design, webspace … ) of which work-in-progress can be shown on 28 Feb 2026
- Good notion of French and English
- Availability between 21 and 28 February 2026 in Brussels
What we offer for international artists • €1200 gross artist fee • €300 Contribution to travel and accommodation • Networking with local communities, researchers and other contributors
Timeline
- Call closes 19 December
- Artists notified before 12/01, invited artists will be contacted for an interview and 1 or 2 work sessions
- Start Residency 21 Feb 2026

- Statement of intent (max 2 pages) including your motivation to participate, your experience with re-using vacant buildings, your experience with engaging with local communities and co-creation, your ideas for an artistic output mapping these subjects
