Readymades
The use of public space as a place for meeting and debate is frequently impeded by practical as well as by political issues. The practical ones are the weather, traffic, visual unattractiveness or accessibility; the political ones are the privatization or fencing off of space and a lack of investment.
City Mine(d) believes that solutions to the practical problems can contribute to tackling the political ones. Besides, these solutions do not necessarily have to be large-scale, expensive or complicated; the imaginative use or even re-use of cheap materials can also profoundly transform a place.
Therefore, City Mine(d) presents ‘readymades’: uncomplicated inexpensive immediate interventions that solve an obstruction to the use of places, and raise awareness about the importance of public space.
Readymades have been made in workshops in Brussels, Sheffield and Belfast; providing a stock of six available readymades.
