S’hassah
Premiere of the monologue "S’hassah" by Saïd Saïdi on 23 May 2001, performed in the Tamazight language.
Tamazight is the language of the Berber people of North Africa, and is used by more than 3,000,000 people. It is also the vernacular language of large part of the migrant community from North Africa in Brussels. However, only few culture products exist in the Tamazight-language, and official recognition by authorities and media remains low. The staging of the play not only contributed to recognition for the Tamazight-culture, it also offered access to performing arts for an underserved audience.
“S’hassah”, or “Liar” is a play by Fouad Azeroual and tells the story of Abbès, king of liars, who experiences a thousand and two misfortunes. Everyday emotions are the central theme in this satire, but a critique on Moroccan media, church and politics, who can be quite generous with the truth, is never far away. Abbès was played by Saïd Saïdi, and was co-produced by Jughurta, a not for profit organisation for the promotion of Berber culture.
