Urban Graffiti Happening
The International Urban Graffiti Happening in Anderlecht offered a platform for hip-hop art, July 1999.
While some aspects of the street subculture hip-hop have made it well into the mainstream, like clothing and rap music, others are occasionally treated with contempt. Yet hip-hop is an international movement, comprising besides rap (MC-ing) and scratch (DJ-ing) also break-dance and graffiti. The latter two are most appropriate to be practiced on public places. However in the ‘renewed and planned’ city, it become increasingly difficult for the artists to create their work.
The International Urban Graffiti Happening invited artist from all over Europe to Brussels to show their work. The owners of the Anderlecht abattoirs, the site for Brussels’ biggest market, kindly put their walls at the disposal of the project, and by doing so allowed the artists to fully concentrate on their work. The graffiti project was accompanied by concerts in the evening.
The project was developed in cooperation with Souterrain production.
