MicroMarche, 2007

After a test-run in November 2006 at the North Station, on Sunday 30 September 2007 the first weekly MicroMarchéMidi was organised. On an unused traffic island of the small ring at the Midi Station, next to the Midi markted. Cultural organisations Overmolen, Beursschouwburg and City Mine(d) were convinced that Brussels has an untapped creative potential that, if better exploited, would give initiators more economic autonomy and resilience. They use the qualities of a market - selling, exchanging, meeting - to showcase micro-production and creativity. Clothing and food, but also body care, audio-visual creations and screen printing are offered. Theatre and musical performances give the market its own identity.

With the weather as their biggest obstacle, the cooperative started looking for a permanent and, above all, indoor location. After a lot of exploration, they ended up in the Steenkoolkaai, in the buildings that the Miroiterie Leys had just left. MicroMarchéMidi cut the “Midi” of its name and threw itself into a new adventure with small-scale creativity. Its new zest earned MicroMarché the Thuis in de Stad award in 2011 as "a lever for thinking about new forms of private-public cooperation, of cross-linking between economy and culture, and of supporting an intercultural offer that can reach a broad public in a differentiated way," according to the jury report.
